Youth Department

Building Lifelong Learners!

At KCPL, our mission is to meet the educational, informational, and cultural needs of our community. Nowhere are those needs more important than with the Youth in our community! In the Youth Department, we seek to foster the skills and attitudes necessary for our children to become lifelong learners.

We do that in a variety of ways! We have an ever-growing collection of books for children! This includes “board books” which are designed to survive even the roughest of playtimes with your baby, picture books with all your childhood favorites and new bestsellers, and chapter books featuring popular series and heroes to feed your young one’s mind! We’ve also got a well-stocked non-fiction section, an entire section of comics and graphic novels, as well as many popular books available on audiobook.

Finally, we are happy to have a variety of electronic resources available to help children find important information, or just play safely on the internet! We have twelve computers available that patrons can use to access the internet safely thanks to content monitoring and filtering software. We also have four special AWE learning computers, which are full of fun learning games aimed at our younger guests! Through the box on the right hand side of the page under “Links” we also have helpful websites and databases that can help with homework, research, or just fun!

Storytimes

The Youth Department also offers several storytimes. These programs are hand-crafted by our librarians to engage your child’s mind in key areas related to language development while still being super fun! Our current schedule of storytimes is:

Mother Goose on the Loose – 10:30 am, Tuesday Mornings

Mother Goose on the Loose (MGOL) is a fun, interactive storytime aimed at primarily babies and toddlers.
The activities, stories, and crafts all focus on developing your child’s ability to interact with the world and help get them started on the path to reading!

Morning Stars – 10:30 am, Wednesday Mornings

Morning Stars is another all-inclusive storytime, focused on providing fun AND some learning to everyone from babies through preschool.

S.T.E.M. Program – 10:30 am, Thursday Mornings

The STEM Program is a great time for elementary age kids to build kits, hear stories, and interact with other kids! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Resources for Parents and Teachers

Our department also tries very hard to offer high quality materials and assistance that would otherwise be inaccessible to parents or teachers. We have a wide variety of materials available for checkout, from books on parenting or teaching, to Lego Kits, to science kits that are perfect for either home or the classroom! Contact us if you would be interested in any of these materials, or stop by the Youth Department to see them for yourself!
