Every summer since 1920, the library has run the Summer Reading Program. The main purpose of the program since its inception has been to combat the “Summer Slide” or the tendency for children to lose knowledge they have learned in school over the summer. Studies have repeatedly shown that even small amounts of engaged reading over summer vacation greatly helps reduce this loss.
