Grand Army of the Republic

McGrady-Brockman House

On Monday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m., Knox County Public Library Historical Collection Administrator Brian Spangle will present a program at the McGrady-Brockman House titled “The Grand Army of the Republic and its Allied Orders.” This program will cover the history of the GAR, the fraternal organization established for Union veterans of the Civil War in 1866. The five allied orders, among them the Women’s Relief Corps., that were formed to support the GAR, and which continue to function today, will also be discussed.

The presentation will conclude with some history of the local GAR Posts. The GAR Hall in Vincennes actually stood at 7th and Seminary Streets, directly across from the library’s Carnegie building.

This program is sponsored by the Northwest Territory Genealogical Society. It is free and open to the public.
